In today’s economic downturn, more and more peolpe appear to be turning to the voice IP outfit Skype as it sees a surge in new users.

According to Skype’s chief operating officer, Scott Durchslag, people are turning to skype in an attempt to cut their phone bills. “People feel they can get value in quality without making a huge trade off” he was quoted as saying. Skype is expanding in the business market too and Scott Durchslag said companies were getting in contact looking for packages.

Skype, owned by eBay, provides downloadable software that allows users to make free calls to other Skype users and relatively low-cost ones to mobiles and landlines as well as offering free video chat. Durchslag said the company has 370 million registered users and is adding about 30 million subscribers a quarter.
