The most expensive card in the new 5 series DirectX 11 ATI graphics cards, the 5870×2, appears to produce a massive amount of heat proving to make it very hard to cool effectively. The TDP is set at a massive 376W and although ATI are working on resolving the heat issues, a drop in speed for the GPUs seem inevitable to drop the heat levels down.
Even the 725MHz cores found in the Radeon 5850 have a TDP of 340W which is still quite a step up from the previous highest TDP – 286W found in the Radeon 4870×2. A sub 300 Watt card would seem the best option here but perhaps ATI will go ahead with with the 300W+ TDPs which currently feature and will perhaps use as many as 4 PCI-e connections to power.
